Debt warning signals

Recognizing the warning signs that you may be carrying too much debt can help you prevent a small debt management problem from growing more serious. 
 

Debt warning signs include:

  • Frequently paying bills after they are due
  • Making only the minimum payment required
  • Being unable to pay the monthly minimum payments
  • Skipping payments on some bills in order to pay others
  • Using cash advances on one credit card to pay off another
  • Panicking when faced with an unexpected expense (e.g. car repair)
  • Arguing with your spouse about money, or being afraid to talk to your spouse about money
  • Being turned down for credit or a loan
  • Receiving calls from creditors or a collection agency
  • Asking friends or family for loans
  • Feeling stressed and anxious about your financial situation
  • Being unable to sleep or concentrate because of your finances
  • Having your telephone, electricity or other utilities cut off
