Saskatchewan introduces new wage garnishment and bankruptcy exemption rules

On May 28th, 2012 the Saskatchewan government introduced new Money Judgment Enforcement legislation that will have an impact on Saskatchewanians who are dealing with debt problems and who may have creditors threatening wage garnishments. The law now allows judgment creditors to garnish an individual's pay either an amount that exceeds the greater of seventy percent (70%) of your pay, or $1,500 plus $300 per dependant.

The new legislation also affects several other pieces of legislation including The Exemptions Act which outlines what assets you can keep in bankruptcy in Saskatchewan. For an updated list of property that is exempt from seizure visit our Saskatchewan Bankruptcy Exemptions page.
